A new "sextortion" phishing email scam has been making the rounds, but this one includes a piece of sensitive data that may seem alarming. It's highly recommended you read this Alert carefully to know what these emails look like, and what you should do if you receive one in your inbox.
The bad actors claim to have footage of targets engaging in various intimate activities. Cybercriminals try to convince the target malware has been downloaded onto their devices, which allows the bad actors to record their activities.
What makes this particular "sextortion" scam alarming is that bad actors have been discovering targets' home addresses, after which they go on Google Maps and other online mapping applications and lift the image from the service.
The bad actors include the image of the home address in the email to make it look as though they will personally visit the target if they do not meet their demands.
The goal of the scam is to have the target pay a Bitcoin ransom (around $2,000) to the bad actor. If payment is not received, the bad actor claims they will release the "footage" to all of their contacts.
