Passwords are an essential and huge part of our everyday lives. You probably (hopefully) have many different passwords, and it’s nearly impossible to remember which password goes to which site. And with data breaches happening more and more often, it’s more important than ever to make sure your passwords are strong and unique for each site. So how do you remember them all? How do you make sure they are strong enough? We recommend using a password manager.
What is a Password Manager?
Password managers are apps or websites that store all of your passwords in one place, protected by a master password. They store your login information for all the websites you use and help you log into them automatically. Password managers often have a browser extension, and they can also be installed on your phone.
Why Should You Use a Password Manager?
We recommend using a password manager for several reasons:
You only have to remember one password -- the master password for the password manager site.
Password managers help you generate and save strong, unique passwords when you sign up to new websites (or create new passwords for old websites). They take the difficulty out of coming up with and remembering strong passwords.
They take away the temptation to use the most commonly used passwords and they also take away the temptation to reuse a password or passphrase. For example: ThisIsMyPassword+Lowes! ThisIsMyPassword+Walmart! Using passwords like these can establish a pattern. If a few sites get compromised, hackers could more easily figure out your passwords to other sites and gain access to many of your accounts.
They eliminate the need to type in a password. If you’re in a public or crowded place, someone could see what you’re typing in and take note of it. That won’t happen with a password manager that automatically fills it in for you.
Which Password Manager Should I Use?
There are several good password managers out there. Some come at a cost, while others are free. If password safe training is part of your BlackCloak plan, we'll help you set it up and provide training on how to use it. If it’s not part of your plan, we will give you recommendations based on your needs and use-case.
