In Other News...Marriott Reports New Data Breach
Marriott International has reported it has experienced a data breach, as cybercriminals claimed to have stolen 20 gigabytes of sensitive data, including guest credit card information, names, and other internal business information. Marriott's systems were compromised in June via a social engineering attack, when cybercriminals tricked an employee into giving them access to their computer. Marriott is preparing to notify 300 to 400 people regarding the breach, and has started to notify law enforcement agencies.
While the impacted user population is relatively small and isolated to one hotel, it's important to note that cybercriminals are persistent, and similar attacks will continue. It's important to remain vigilant and watch out for suspicious emails. If you happen to receive a data breach notification letter from Marriott, reach out to the Concierge Team at ask@blackcloak.io for guidance and recommendations on the next steps to take. If you store your credit card information with various hotel chains, such as Marriott, consider placing a virtual card on file instead to protect your card details from being compromised.
