There is an email extortion scam currently circulating that could end up in your inbox, so be on the lookout . . . and just delete it.
What is the Scam?
Cybercriminals are taking advantage of the recent Pegasus spyware attacks that have been in the news lately, trying to make you panic.
They are emailing people stating that the user's device has been compromised by a zero-click vulnerability (meaning the user was infected simply by doing nothing more than visiting a website or receiving a text message). The cybercriminal states they have been using the spyware software to monitor the user and obtain their messages, photos and emails.
Then they ask for payment in BitCoin (or other cryptocurrency) to prevent the release of this information.
What does this mean for You?
Scams like these are not uncommon. You may have been a recipient in the past of a similar email scam where the bad actors claim to have your password and caught you on a webcam. These scams are designed to elicit a sense of fear and urgency in you, and they do their job well!
