Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Volkswagen, Lamborghini, and VW Credit, Inc. customers should take note of a data breach involving approximately 3.3 million customers that was reported this weekend.
Who Is Impacted?
Prior or current owners of Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Volkswagen, Lamborghini, and VW vehicles and/or those who might have used financing through VW Credit, Inc.
What Data Is At Risk?
First and last name, personal or business mailing address, email address, or phone number.
In some instances, the data also included information about a vehicle purchased, leased, or inquired about, such as the: Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), make, model, year, color, and trim packages.
What Is My Real Risk?
Cybercriminals could use the information to target you with phishing emails or scams related to your vehicle, recall notices that are fake, or other scams involving warranties, as they know what type of car you have or have had in the past.
For those whose Social Security Number (SSN) was stolen, you may be at a heightened risk of identity theft. Your SSN is more likely to be a part of the file if you used credit/financing to purchase your vehicle.
What To Do About This?
If you receive a data breach letter in the mail:
Review it and feel free to contact us;
Watch out for email or phone scams and contact us or forward the emails to our team so we can let you know what to do;
You may wish to take Audi up on the credit monitoring that is offered, but this would be duplicative for many of you who already have this protection with BlackCloak and might lead to confusing over-notification/alerts; and
Place a credit freeze on your Credit Reporting Agency file for Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. As a reminder, credit freeze links are accessible in the BlackCloak mobile application (Support > Identity Freeze) or latest version of our desktop application (Credit Alert/Freeze).
As always, if you have any questions, please let us know by emailing us at ask@BlackCloak.io. We are happy to help!
