Nine million AT&T wireless customers are being notified after some of their information was exposed due to a hack that occurred at a marketing vendor.
What Information Was Involved?
Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI) from some wireless accounts was exposed. Exposed information included: customer first names, wireless account numbers, wireless phone numbers, and email addresses. A subset of customers also had their rate plan name, past due amount, monthly payment amount, various monthly charges and/or minutes used exposed but AT&T has stated this information was years old.
Information That Was Not Included
AT&T has stated that the breached information did not contain credit card information, Social Security Number, account passwords or other sensitive personal information.
What To Do About This?
Step 1 - If you are an AT&T customer, navigate to your privacy preferences within your AT&T account and select the options as outlined in the screenshot below for every phone number on your plan.
If you don't know your AT&T wireless login, then use this form to update your preferences. Select both Opt-Out options displayed.
By submitting this request, you will restrict AT&T's use of your Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI) for the purposes of offering new types of products and services to you from the AT&T family of companies Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI).
You may also call AT&T customer support directly at (800) 315-8303 to perform a CPNI Opt-Out request if you do not want to submit the form online.
What If You're Not an AT&T Customer?
We recommend that you adjust your privacy choices with your wireless carrier and also opt-out of your wireless carrier using your CPNI. Check out our guide Adjusting Privacy Settings for Your Mobile Accounts for more guidance.
